Voiceover

Fijian, an official language of Fiji, is a branch of the Austronesian language family, which spans from Taiwan to Madagascar, and is more specifically part of the Oceanic group. The Fijian language itself is a language of the chiefs Ratu Seru Cakobau and of Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna, a language of the ancestors and gods, as well as of the Fijian Bible. Fijian has been influenced by other languages and cultures such those of Tonga and other Pacific Islands, and largely from Britain.

Key Dialects: Meke Fijian (traditional), Standard Fijian (evolved from traditional), Colloquial Fijian (informal every-day speech), and ‘Old High Fijian’ (developed by European missionaries).
