Dagaare is classified as a member of the western Oti-volta group of the Gur branch of the Niger-Congo language family also called 'Mabia' languages. It is the maternal language of the Dagaaba people in Ghana and also in the adjoining areas of Burkina Faso and Cote d'Ivoire. It has been described as a dialect continuum that also includes Waale and Birifor. The indigenous speakers of Dagaare are called the Dagaaba (also nicknamed Dagarti). Dagaare language is related to Gurene, Dagbane, Mampruli, Kusaal, Buli and Moore.


Key Dialects: the Northern dialect, Central dialect, Southern dialect and Western dialect. Alternatively, these dialects are also known as Dagara (Lobr), Dagaare, Waale and Birifor respectively.
