The Macedonian language (Македонски, Makedonski) is the official language of the Republic of Macedonia. It is also officially recognised in the District of Korçë in Albania. Macedonian is closely related to Standard Bulgarian.

Based on a large group of features, the Macedonian dialects can be divided into Eastern  Western and Northern groups. The dialect of the capital, Skopje, is located within the Northern area. The dialects of the West Central area, largest in size and population and most distinct from both Serbian/Croatian and Bulgarian, with elements from the dialect of Skopje, the Macedonian capital, are the basis of the literary standard.
