Lao is closely related to Thai and belongs to Tai subgroup of the Sino-Tibetan family of languages. The writing system of Lao is an abugida and is closely related to the writing system used in Thai.

The Lao language has many dialects & Vientiane Lao, is the predominant dialect due to its use in the capital (hence it gets its name), is widely understood throughout the country.
